President & Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Parmar has more than 20 years of experience as a senior executive and a director of high growth Canadian companies. Prior to joining Ostara, he was the CFO of a local family office where he managed investments, capital and M&A activity for a portfolio of growing businesses located in Western Canada. He was also the CFO of two Vancouver based technology companies where he led their going public processes on the TSX and AIM Market of the London Stock Exchange. Mr. Parmar holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from the University of British Columbia, is a graduate of the Ivey Executive Management Program at the University of Western Ontario, and is a Chartered Professional Accountant.
AHREN BRITTON, M.A.Sc., P.Eng.
Chief Technology Officer
Mr. Britton has over 17 years of experience in environmental engineering, with a focus on the wastewater treatment industry. He is a co-inventor of Ostara’s technology and developed the first prototype during his research at the University of British Columbia. His professional experience includes roles in engineering consulting, municipal utilities and heavy industry both in North America and in Australasia.
Chief Operating Officer
Mr. DeBerry has more than 20 years of experience managing and helping to increase efficiencies at large operations. Before arriving at Ostara in 2013, he was General Manager at the Fairmont facility at Resolute Forest Products for eight years. Prior to that, he ran his own gas and oil drilling services business for four years, DeBerry Enterprises, Inc. Mr. DeBerry is a graduate of Fairmont State College with a Bachelor of Science in Safety Engineering Technology.
EDWARD JONES, B.Sc.
Chief Information Officer
Mr. Jones is responsible for Ostara’s enterprise-wide IT strategy and operations. As a co-founder of Ostara, Mr. Jones was instrumental in Ostara’s growth into the technology leader it is today. Mr. Jones has more than 30 years of leadership experience in strategy, IT management and industrial process control. His previous business experience includes technical director of RTM Norden Inc., an international technology consulting firm, working with the manufacturing sector throughout North America and Europe. Mr. Jones also has international experience with long-term projects in Sweden, Finland, and Mexico.
MATTHEW KUZMA, BAS
Vice President, Nutrient Recovery Solutions
Mr. Kuzma has more than 20 years of water and wastewater management experience ranging from large multinational corporations to venture capital funded technology start-ups, including five years with Ostara as Managing Director, Nutrient Recovery. Prior to re-joining Ostara as Vice President, Nutrient Recovery Solutions, Matt held management positions with Anaergia, Organica Water, and US Filter/Siemens Water Technologies (now Evoqua). With specific expertise in nutrient recovery, anaerobic digestion, biological treatment of industrial and municipal wastewater, and membrane separation processes for water and wastewater, Mr. Kuzma is a seasoned expert in sustainable resource recovery solutions. Mr. Kuzma is a professional engineer and holds a Bachelor of Applied Sciences in Engineering from Miami University. Mr. Kuzma is also an active member of several industry organizations including International Water Association, Water Environment Federation, Water Environment Research Foundation, National Association of Clean Water Agencies, and the California Water Environment Association.
MOLLY BIEDENFELD, BS, MBA
Vice President, Nutrients Market Development and Sales
Ms. Biedenfeld has more than 14 years of experience in the agriculture industry, about half of that in the fertilizer market. She joined Cargill Inc. in 2001 as commodity merchandiser and transitioned to The Mosaic Company in 2007 where she held various roles within the potash and phosphate divisions. In 2011, Ms. Biedenfeld was appointed Senior Manager of North American Phosphates, where she directed the positioning and risk management of Mosaic’s phosphate fertilizer portfolio. She has a Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University and an MBA from University of Minnesota.
ROB CRYSTAL, MA, CPA, CA
Vice President, Finance
Mr. Crystal has more than 12 years of experience in finance, accounting, tax, and audit. He has been working with Ostara since 2010, originally as Corporate Controller. Prior to joining Ostara, he worked in the audit practice at KPMG LLP in Vancouver on a variety of clients in the renewable energy, technology, mining and real estate industries. Mr. Crystal is a Chartered Professional Accountant, and holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of British Columbia.
JOSH CINNAMON, BA, JD
Mr. Cinnamon practiced for nine years at two of Canada’s largest top-tier business firms, splitting time between Calgary Alberta and Vancouver, British Columbia. Prior to joining Ostara, Josh was Senior Counsel at a Vancouver-based NASDAQ/TSX-listed commodity company, where he managed a diverse portfolio that included the company’s USA, Egypt and Asia Pacific operations and support for all financing matters. He has extensive experience advising on private and public M&A and corporate finance matters, IPOs, bond issuances, and syndicated lending matters. Josh also has significant corporate commercial law expertise and extensive experience drafting business agreements for companies, joint ventures and partnerships active in a variety of industries. Mr. Cinnamon obtained his J.D. from the University of Calgary and is licensed to practice in British Columbia and Alberta.
