President & Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Parmar has more than 20 years of experience as a senior executive and a director of high growth Canadian companies. Prior to joining Ostara, he was the CFO of a local family office where he managed investments, capital and M&A activity for a portfolio of growing businesses located in Western Canada. He was also the CFO of two Vancouver based technology companies where he led their going public processes on the TSX and AIM Market of the London Stock Exchange. Mr. Parmar holds a Bachelor Commerce (Finance) from the University of British Columbia, is a graduate of the Ivey Executive Management Program at the University of Western Ontario, and is a Chartered Professional Accountant.
AHREN BRITTON, M.A.Sc., P.Eng.
Chief Technology Officer
Mr. Britton has over 17 years of experience in environmental engineering, with a focus on the wastewater treatment industry. He is a co-inventor of Ostara’s technology and developed the first prototype during his research at the University of British Columbia. His professional experience includes roles in engineering consulting, municipal utilities and heavy industry both in North America and in Australasia.
Chief Operating Officer
Mr. DeBerry has more than 20 years of experience managing and helping to increase efficiencies at large operations. Before arriving at Ostara in 2013, he was General Manager at the Fairmont facility at Resolute Forest Products for eight years. Prior to that, he ran his own gas and oil drilling services business for four years, DeBerry Enterprises, Inc. Mr. DeBerry is a graduate of Fairmont State College with a Bachelor of Science in Safety Engineering Technology.
Managing Director, Europe
Ms. Gysin has more than 16 years of experience in the water industry, both in large blue chip consulting firms and technology start-ups. Before joining Ostara in 2016, Ms. Gysin led the innovation agenda for a high-growth professional services firm. Ms. Gysin has held management and business development roles in several start-up businesses where she developed asset-backed projects for biosolids and organic waste treatment. In 2005, Ms. Gysin set-up a platform to accelerate routes to market for start-up companies in the water sector. The program successfully supported commercialisation of approximately 50 technologies and also helped to attract over £20 million of venture investment to the sector. Ms. Gysin holds an Advanced Diploma in Commercial Management from the Institute of Commercial Management.
MATTHEW KUZMA, BAS
Vice President, Nutrient Recovery Solutions
Mr. Kuzma has more than 20 years of water and wastewater management experience ranging from large multinational corporations to venture capital funded technology start-ups, including five years with Ostara as Managing Director, Nutrient Recovery. Prior to re-joining Ostara as Vice President, Nutrient Recovery Solutions, Matt held management positions with Anaergia, Organica Water, and US Filter/Siemens Water Technologies (now Evoqua). With specific expertise in nutrient recovery, anaerobic digestion, biological treatment of industrial and municipal wastewater, and membrane separation processes for water and wastewater, Mr. Kuzma is a seasoned expert in sustainable resource recovery solutions. Mr. Kuzma is a professional engineer and holds a Bachelor of Applied Sciences in Engineering from Miami University. Mr. Kuzma is also an active member of several industry organizations including International Water Association, Water Environment Federation, Water Environment Research Foundation, National Association of Clean Water Agencies, and the California Water Environment Association.
MOLLY BIEDENFELD, BS, MBA
Vice President, Nutrients Market Development and Sales
Ms. Biedenfeld has more than 14 years of experience in the agriculture industry, about half of that in the fertilizer market. She joined Cargill Inc. in 2001 as commodity merchandiser and transitioned to The Mosaic Company in 2007 where she held various roles within the potash and phosphate divisions. In 2011, Ms. Biedenfeld was appointed Senior Manager of North American Phosphates, where she directed the positioning and risk management of Mosaic’s phosphate fertilizer portfolio. She has a Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University and an MBA from University of Minnesota.
DEBRA HADDEN, BPR
Vice President, Marketing & Communications
Ms. Hadden has more than 18 years of experience building strategic communications programs for companies in the technology and telecommunications sector. Before joining Ostara in 2015, Ms. Hadden provided public and media relations’ counsel to the company since it launched its first commercial nutrient recovery facility with Clean Water Services in Portland in 2009. Ms. Hadden has also provided counsel to a number of leading companies around crisis communications and investor relations throughout her career, including in senior public relations and marketing roles at companies such as Vancouver-based Hoggan & Associates and TELUS.
ERIC STREETER, BA, MA, LLB
General Counsel and Corporate Secretary
Mr. Streeter has more than 14 years of experience as corporate counsel in several multinational technology companies. Before joining Ostara as General Counsel in 2012, he held various senior legal roles with MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates, Canada’s leading space and satellite technology company, including four years in the United Kingdom as Commercial Director for the company’s United Kingdom and Ireland businesses. He was also legal counsel at Creo, a Vancouver-based graphic arts technology company, and started his career as an associate at McCarthy Tetrault.
