ACWA teams up with Ostara for delivering nutrient recovery solutions to UK water companies
ACWA Services, a unit under UK-based water and wastewater company ACWA Group, has signed a technology licensing agreement with Canadian Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies, following which it will supply advanced nutrient recovery solutions for water companies in the UK.
Ostara’s Pearl process technology enables recovery of phosphorus and nitrogen content from wastewater streams at municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants. The recovered nutrients can then be transformed to generate high-value, eco-friendly fertiliser Crystal Green.
Elimination of the potentially harmful nutrients and their use to generate fertiliser not only improves the operational efficiency of the wastewater treatment plants, but can also protect waterways in the country.
Under the terms of the deal, ACWA will act as a UK delivery partner for Ostara and be responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of all equipment and associated civil works where required.
The firm will be supplying the Ostara solution along with their existing ammonia removal technology AMTREAT.
Key components for the solution will be supplied under licence by Ostara.
ACWA UK general manager Peter Brewer said: “Ostara’s phosphorus recovery technology is an excellent fit with our existing wastewater treatment solutions as it complements our AMTREAT ammonia removal process used by leading wastewater treatment companies in the UK.
“The ability to recover phosphorus: an essential and fast depleting natural resource required for increased global food production, while creating an additional revenue stream for our water industry customers, is particularly attractive.
“The annual savings in chemical dosing alone for some wastewater treatment plants could be in the hundreds of thousands of pounds.”
Ostara will be responsible for the sale and marketing of the Crystal Green fertiliser produced from the process.
