Kennedy, Rendell praise York City plant
There’s a smell of more than success in the air at York City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, but the words spoken there Thursday created a more savory experience for attendees at the unveiling of a new environmentally friendly facility expected to save taxpayers money.
Gov. Ed Rendell and Robert Kennedy Jr. were among the speakers at the event, held to show off a new nutrient recovery plant that reduces pollution headed for the Chesapeake Bay by removing phosphorous and nitrogen from the sewage treatment facility’s stream.
The chemicals are used to create an environmentally friendly fertilizer that will be sold, with proceeds being shared with the cash-strapped city through a public/private partnership.
