New Facility to Recover Phosphorus for Reuse, Helping Hias Wastewater Treatment Plant Meet Discharge Regulations Using its How2O process

VANCOUVER (BC, Canada), TAMPA (FL, USA), and Ottestad (Norway) – July 6, 2021 – Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc. (“Ostara”), Hias IKS (“Hias”), and Enwa PMI (“Enwa”) announce today the signing of definitive agreements to implement key Ostara nutrient recovery technologies as part of a larger facilities upgrade project (the “Hias WWTP Upgrade Project”) being undertaken by Hias IKS at their wastewater treatment plant (“Hias WWTP”) in Ottestad, Norway.

“We are excited to be part of a uniquely innovative partnership with Hias and Enwa to deliver a truly visionary and environmentally sustainable project, our first project in Scandinavia” said Dan Parmar, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ostara. “As a continuation of Hias’ past history embracing sustainable and advanced technologies, the nutrient recovery project utilizing Ostara technology is a perfect complement to Hias’ innovative biological phosphorus removal solution already under construction.”

“We are looking forward to working with ENWA and Ostara on this project, which will complete the sustainable upgrade of the Hias Water Resource Recovery Facility in Ottestad, Norway. With the Hias Process we have already eliminated the need for chemicals for phosphorus precipitation. Hence, the installation of the Ostara technology will maximize nutrient recovery from our WRRF and close the loop on phosphorus recovery and recycling,” says Morten Finborud, CEO of Hias IKS.

“We’re very proud that we were selected to deliver the first phosphorus recovery project in Norway and we are very much looking forward to the co-operation with Ostara and Hias” said Flemming G. Wessman, Chief Executive Officer of Enwa.

Project Overview

HIas IKS provides water and wastewater services to the 60,000 people in the municipalities of Hamar, Løten, Ringsaker, and Stange, with wastewater treated at their facility in Ottestad. The current project includes rehabilitation, capacity expansion, and the addition of a phosphorus recovery system to complement the project already underway to implement the world’s first full-scale biological phosphorus removal system utilizing biofilm (The “Hias Process”). Through the combination of the “Hias Process” and Ostara’s Pearl and WASSTRIP solutions, the facility will significantly reduce phosphorus discharges from their liquid effluent, while also enabling recovery of the valuable phosphorus in a mineral fertilizer.  This combined set of projects is part of the overall strategy of Hias IKS to improve utilization of the resources in wastewater for energy and fertilizer production.  As the lead contractor on site, Enwa will be responsible for all facets of the project implementation in both the “Hias Process” and the Pearl® nutrient recovery system.

Ostara NRS System

The nutrient recovery system (the “Ostara NRS System”) as constructed by Enwa at Hias, will feature an Ostara Pearl® 2K reactor used in cooperation with Ostara’s “WASSTRIP®” technology. Ostara’s proprietary Pearl® and WASSTRIP® technologies solve nutrient management challenges by recovering phosphorus and nitrogen from municipal water streams and transforming these nutrients into Crystal Green®, Ostara’s premium line of sustainable fertilizer products sold globally to the turf & ornamental, and agriculture markets. Following the upgrades at Hias, the Ostara NRS System will have the potential to produce up to 250 tonnes of Crystal Green per year. Pursuant to a Fertilizer Offtake Agreement that will generate revenue for Hias IKS, Ostara will purchase for resale through its network of blenders and distributors in Europe and North America, all tonnes of Crystal Green produced by the Ostara NRS System. Construction of the Ostara NRS System component of the Hias WWTP is scheduled for completion in early 2022.

 About Ostara:

Ostara’s Crystal Green® fertilizers are the first slow-release phosphorus fertilizers to release nutrients in response to plant demands; these Root-Activated™ granules are proven to increase yields, enhance soil health and significantly reduce phosphorus tie-up and runoff, thereby improving food security while protecting local waterways from nutrient pollution. In addition, the Company’s Pearl® technology recovers phosphorus and nitrogen from industrial, agricultural, and municipal water streams, and transforms these nutrients into its premium, sustainable Crystal Green® fertilizers which are sold into the agriculture and turf & ornamental sectors through a network of established blenders and distributors in North America and Europe.
